Our exciting new project Totem Poll will have it’s world premiere at the 2015 Come Out Children’s Festival in Adelaide. Especially created for young people between the ages of 8 – 12. We hope that it will be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Totem Poll is a fun, magical and meaningful interactive art project

What is Totem Poll?

It is an interactive journey where people can create a representation of themselves using their imagination and their own individual strengths, well-being, values and beliefs. This representation becomes a magical head icon. It has been especially created for young people between the ages of 8 – 12. We hope that it will be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Through a series of provocative questions, self examinations and selections, participants will create a unique totem head icon. For example with the question, ‘If you were to choose your own super power’, the answer ’super strength’ would place a diamond shape into the third eye space on the head.

How does Totem Poll work?

There will be three distinct stages to this project, the first two only accessible to schools.

Stage 1: From the beginning of the 2015 school year, South Australian teachers will be able to use this interactive art project with their 8–12 year old classes. We have reviewed the curriculum and matched skills learned at school into the project. And made it really, really fun! A simple teacher’s guide is now available that explains how to use, integrate and extend it. It will not only live in a digital space, there are also activities planned for the head icons to extend into the class room.

Stage 2: During Come Out Children’s Festival, new online functionality will be added to the art project. An individual head icon will be able to meet and find similar magical head icons, and young people will find connections with others young people in unexpected ways. All the head icons made by students will dynamically stack to represent a class totem pole. At a glance you’ll be able to see a fantastic variety of people’s weird and wonderful head icons. Classes will be seen in comparison to other classes. Classes will aggregate to a common head icon, to become schools. And schools will be able to compare themselves against other schools.

Stage 3: Also during the festival there will be a large interactive installation in the Adelaide Festival Centre. The general public will be able to explore Totem Polls from across the state on an array of big screens. Fun? Fun!

Our ambition for this interactive art project is to make something fun and magical. We hope that for participants the head icon will be a meaningful symbol of identifying an unrecognised great part of themselves, that they then come to know.

It was officially announced at the Come Out Children’s Festival program launch last Friday. We’ll be posting more about it as the project progresses. Keep an eye out.
