A practical guide
AI isn’t one thing — it’s a collection of tools that can write, analyse, summarise, and automate tasks your team currently does by hand. The useful stuff isn’t futuristic. It’s here now, and it’s surprisingly accessible.
If you’ve used ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot, you’ve already used AI. These tools have moved from novelty to genuinely useful in a remarkably short time. For a nonprofit team with more work than people, that matters.
The practical applications fall into a few buckets: writing and communications, donor engagement, data and reporting, and internal operations. The headline is this: AI tools are best understood as a capable junior team member. They’re fast, they don’t get tired, and they can handle a solid first draft of almost anything. They also need supervision, make confident-sounding mistakes, and have no understanding of your organisation’s context unless you provide it.
That last point is important. AI doesn’t replace your expertise — it amplifies it. A good fundraiser using AI tools will produce better work faster. AI on its own will produce plausible-sounding work that misses the mark.

Your staff are drafting emails in ChatGPT, summarising meeting notes, and writing grant applications with AI assistance — right now, on their personal accounts.

AI is evolving fast, and some changes will matter more to nonprofits than others. These are the trends already in motion.
