5000+
5000+ is a multiyear initiative conceived to explore great ideas for the future of Adelaide, our home city and the capital of South Australia. It’s an unique and ambitious project that blazes a trail through public engagement to implementation.
We worked closely with the Integrated Design Strategy team to develop the 5000+ website. The site informs and prompts the ideation process and aims to encourage citizens to be involved in crowd sourcing ideas for the future of Adelaide. People can suggest ideas relevant to the future of our city and vote and comment on the ideas of others. So far, more than 200 insightful and inspired ideas have been suggested, yielding nearly 400 comments and thousands of votes. Some of the more popular ideas including putting a swimming pool in the River Torrens, community gardens, activating laneways and finding creative uses for all the different spaces around the city. This data provides a rich picture of the issues and improvements that will be addressed through the design process and eventually flow through to the policy making process.
The reach of the site extends out to the ubiquitous social networks Facebook and Twitter. We have integrated the idea gathering functionality of the site directly into Facebook so people there can suggest ideas there. This increases engagement and reduces the friction of contribution. Ideas that are published on the site are also published on Twitter and Facebook feeds to encourage followers to continually engage. A reply to an idea tweeted is funnelled through to become a comment on an idea within the site.
We built the 5000+ site using our open source CMS Gluttonberg. This enabled us to create the rich idea gathering functionality and accommodate all the other project requirements within the tight project deadline. The same system powers both the site and the Facebook application, making the process of gathering ideas from outside the site seamless.
We’re very proud of our involvement with 5000+. It’s an inspiring initiative that is facilitating the evolution of our city for the next generation.
